Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit CREDO Action. The short explanation of this alert was: Massachusetts lawmakers Gloria Fox and Cynthia Creem have proposed a bill that would allow eligible citizens to register and vote on Election Day. This spring, several hundred supporters packed the Massachusetts State House hearing room to show their support for Election Day Registration. Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin, Lieutenant Governor Tim Murray, leaders from the NAACP, the League of Women Voters, the Urban League, members of labor and community organizations, and experts from out of state all agreed: Election Day Registration could be a significant improvement in the way we run elections. Nearly one-third of eligible citizens did not come out to vote on Election Day 2004 in Massachusetts. But don't blame apathy. Antiquated state law requires people to register a full 20 days before an election. Just when a race gets interesting enough to draw in new voters, it's too late. Making voter registration easy and convenient is an effective way to increase civic participation in our state -- it's time for Massachusetts to enact Election Day Registration. Please send your legislature a clear message: the citizens of Massachusetts want Election Day Registration. If you would like to view details on this alert, please visit here. |
